What factors affect alcohol tolerance?

The intoxication degree depends not only on the amount of alcoholic beverages that a person drinks, but also on the individual characteristics of his body.

For example, those who eat a lot of fruit break down ethyl alcohol faster due to the high activity of special enzymes, as Canadian researchers found.

According to RIA Novosti, bats, primates and some species of marsupials were among the most resistant to ethanol. However, in insectivores, alcohol dehydrogenase is not so active.

Scientists have also found that mutations in the ADH7 gene increase the efficiency of alcohol dehydrogenase in humans by almost 40 times compared to the ancestral form of the enzyme.
